The US 'won' the war already, remember the victory parades 3 years ago? It's keeping the peace in a US occupied country full of people who preferred Saddam and will never be brainwashed into simply being an American possession that is proving impossible. What do you mean by succeed anyway, even if you grab the whole Middle East now you just end up w. more and more ungovernable territory and a completely unstable world oil market. D'oh!

Many of the above answers to your query are examples of how people's blind adherence to partisanism distorts their sensibilities. Either that, or they think they are being cute jumping on the Dump Democrats bandwagon.

The real answer is that everyone wants the US to come out smelling like a rose. The problem is, how?

How to you install a democratic/republic-type of government in a country in which ethnic origin (Kurds); and Religious sects (Sunnis v. Shiites) have been at odds with each other for centuries?

If we force the Iraqi legislature to take a vote, as to who is in favor of US deployment, and the Iraqis decide they don't want the U.S.' presence any longer, do we leave? Have we won, in that Iraq, through their newly-installed government, decided that we are no longer needed?

Success can take many forms; however, the longer we are in Iraq, and Americans are losing their lives, any success will be a small one.

They will not succeed the Republicans want to stay the course in Iraq, and since the vote did not go, this war will carry well over into the election.

How does one "succeed" in Iraq? Do you think that all of the different tribes will learn to get along with each other? Do you think the religious differences between them will be solved? Even if the fighting ceases, what then? Do we have to keep troops there forever to make sure the fighting doesn't start up again, as we have in Korea? Will we "babysit" Iraq forever?

If anyone could answer the question as to just what victory in Iraq means for America, it would be nice, because even George Bush doesn't tell us that. When asked, he said it meant that the Iraqi could walk down the streets in Baghdad in safety. But will Americans ever be able to walk down the streets in Baghdad in safety?

We have already lost the Iraq War. It is just a matter of admitting defeat, apologizing to these people for attacking their country for no reason, undoubtedly making financial reparations for years to come....and bringing our troops home.

There is very little chance of that. Most of the Iraqi population in certain cities knows someone they believe to have been wrongfully killed, wounded, or imprisoned by an American soldier. If they are correct or not is another issue. Therefore as long as we are there, anyone who opposes the US is going to receive a large amount of help from the general population of Iraqi.

1. As much of a lefty as I am. I think it would be worth democrats losing ground if I could hear a clear definition of what success would be. 2. I'm not sure how we could lose a war that was never declared against a country that never attacked us. 3. I thought the mainstream media was in the back pocket of Rupert Murdoch and his multi-billionaire buds, hardly a liberal crowd. 4. No, your questions don't make much sense to me.

When I read something this stupid I am tempted to think, yeah, go ahead, stay in the war, keep killing 100 Americans a month, keep blowing $3 billion a week or whatever it is, yeah fine bankrupt the country, and even if these idiots don't learn anything at least they will suffer for their stupidity. Go ahead man go fight it if you like it so dam much.

It wouldn't change all the lies/mishaps that happened along the way. Everyone wants the outcome to be good, but if we'd not been lied to about WMD's, 3,000+ soldiers could still be alive. If we'd put in huge numbers of troops right at the beginning, the war (probably) wouldn't have been so prolonged and many of those soldiers would be alive. Not to mention all the innocent Iraqis (men, women & children) who just want a decent life w/o terror & violence. I think you need to look past the politics of "being right," stop spewing blame and focus on what actually matters.

Yes. If half the registered Democrats in the country suddenly died from using defective Chinese body paint, that would also be a grievous blow to the party - and about as likely.

Yes. Democrats are running for President on the fact that the war is "failed." If we win, the Dems lose. Tells ya alot, don't it?
