3-D = three dimensional space. Anything that can be measured in length, width, and depth. Think of an empty box.

2-D = two dimensional space.
Think of a picture. It only has length and width.

Now think of a TV set. The set itself is 3-D because it has length, width and depth. However, the picture on the set is only in 2-D because it lacks depth.

Now think of 3-D movies that you watch with special glasses. They show that third element, depth, that a regular movie does not have. It is an illusion.
