i'm looking at this car i want to buy, it's an early 80's dodge diplomat and it has a sheriff's star on both front doors that says "hazard county sheriffs department". i want to know:

1. is it illegal to drive around with these stars still on the car?

2. if so, do i have to remove them if i buy it?

3. can i just paint over them?

4. can i leave the stars and just paint them completely black?(although the car is white but i would like to leave them and just black them out)

I would ask the question to your state police or local sherrif's department. You may be ok considering the car is 27 years old. There may be some classic car clause that allows you to have a car like that with the police stickers on it.

Usurpation of authority is the crime committed by someone who uses a star of a sheriff on a car. Thus, you have to remove it since you are not a sheriff.

It is illegal. It can be considered impersonating a police officer. Remove them and paint the doors.
