My father was a pipe fitter and plumber. I worked with him since I was a kid, during school I worked for him and continued, with being a carpenter while going to med school. I then went into the "business" for various reasons, being interupted by "Nam and, other things, like eating.
He taught me many old tricks that some only shake thier heads at today but, it's saved people a lot of money. Some have forgotten where they came from, how they grew up. I never have and have thanked my father every day for what he taught me, Four years of University, could'nt teach me what he did.

Always do it myself. On tough ones, I get my friends involved, add a few beers and it makes for great bonding. Sometimes we even get the wives involved, if their in the mood. I haven't had to pay to get the job done in years, although it was fun just to sit back and enjoy when the job comes to a climactic end.

Always, I couldn't imagine paying to have something done that could be done within my means. Not only is it gratifying but it also saves frustration when deadlines are not met or expectations weren't living up to the preconception.

Most of the time, with the experts at home depot to tell me how, I can do almost anything.
