I have two ponds made with different liners. My first was a 1500 gal. made with scrap and recycled EPDM rubber from a roofing contractor. It needed pressure washing and a few patches but it was free. The second 2500 gal. was made with a one half of a new PVC nylon pit liner from the oil rigs around here. A friend "borrowed" one from work and is letting me "borrow it" in exchange for helping him install the other half we "borrowed". If your ethically and morally opposed to "borrowing" you could go out to an oil patch and buy a piece. If it's too expensive they would probably give you a liner when they finish drilling. They usually burn and bury them. RScott

"Cheap" rubber pond liner is often thin and inflexible. It becomes brittle in the sun and is easily punctured. Pond liners come in many different millimeter thicknesses, each thickness with a slightly different use. You may want to consider a preformed liner (one of those hard plastic ones).
Regarding pond supplies, "you get what you pay for". I recommend buying the most expensive, long-lasting materials you can afford if you want your pond to last more than a few years; it's just like building a house with cheap materials.
A good pond-building source is http://www.backyardstyle.com/pdf/careguides_pond.pdf. This may help you make some important decisions. I researched for a year before I built my 800 gallon fishpond that has plants and a waterfall, and I am still learning about pond care.
One very important tip regarding fishponds: Make sure the pond does not get rainwater runoff. Fertilizers, pesticides, motor oil, and chemicals from neighbors' lawns will kill your fish.

Try looking at sites for Lowes or Home Depot.
If you clean the site of the pond really carefully, removing rocks, etc, you can buy a box of really tough garbage or lawn bags and use them as the pond liner layer. You can go to the Dollar Store and get a tarp for a few bucks.
People use all kinds of things. You may want to google yard ponds or koi ponds and read the blogs and comments to see what others have used.
I like to look around my shed and garage and find something to recycle instead of buying expensive stuff.
Best of luck to you and the koi!!

I bought some cement for mine. You dig the hole, put a one inch sprinkler line in for airflow and cement the hole. Then you can add a pump later.
