started overheating a lot, wouldn't cool down, finally made a loud pop and then sprayed coolant all over the place from the reservoir tank on the side. think the thermostat is stuck open. don't want to take to the shop unless absolutely necessary. any advice? it's a 4 cylinder engine

If it overheats, the thermostat is stuck closed. The thermostat regulates the flow of coolant in the engine by temperature. Near the top of the radiator will be a hose heading toward the engine. Attached to the hose will be a small housing bolted to the engine. This is the thermostat housing. Depending on the layout of your engine, it will be easy to get to or hard. The garage will charge based on ease of replacement.
