Please don't just accept someone's answer provided here or anywhere else. Do read this explanation and you won't have to ask anyone the correct answers again. It's not really so bad once you get the basics down.

First, the top number of a fraction is the numerator, and the bottom number is the denominator. For this type question, we always start with the denominator.

7/9 and 5/6 - OK, to get the lowest common denominator for both, start with the higher (of two fractions) or the highest (of more than two fractions) denominator (the bottom number of the fraction) shown. (That number would also be the lowest common denominator you'd ever be able to get if the denominators of both fractions could go into this higher/highest denominator. In this case, it doesn't.) So that would be 9 (of 7/9), right?

Next question: will 6 (of 5/6) go into 9 (whole numbers only)? No. That means you go to the next higher multiple of the lowest common denominator, 9, which is 2 x 9, which is 18, right? Will 6 go into 18? Yes. That means that 18 will be the lowest common denominator because both denominators (9 and 6) will go into 18. And you now know that a and b are not possible correct answers.

So change 7/9 to ?/18. Divide the lowest common denominator 18 by the denominator 9 (of 7/9); 9 goes into 18 two times. Then multiply that 2 by the numerator (the top number of the fraction), which is 7, and you get 7 x 2 = 14. You now have 14/18, right?

Do the same to the next fraction: change 5/6 to ?/18. Divide the lowest common denominator 18 by the denominator 6 (of 5/6); 6 goes into 18 three times. Then multiply that 3 by the numerator, which is 5, and you get 5 x 3 = 15. You now have 15/18, right?

You now have 14/18 and 15/18. So which is the correct answer?

Learn it once, know it forever - :)

B.
both 9 and 6 will go into 54 with no remainder, therefore 54 is the LCD.
54 divided by 9 is 6. so multiply both the numerator and denominator of the first fraction by 6. 9x6=54(the numerator)and 7x6=42.(the denominator)
54 divided by 6 is 9 so multiply both the numerator and denominator of the second fraction by 9. 5x9=45 (the numerator) and 6x9=54 (the denominator)
