I know a guy who won't let his wife take anti-depressants because they can cause her to become manic and start spending money and she can also rapidly cycle between being high and being low. I would allow my girl to take them but it would have to be one I approved of. Some of them no and I would want her to exercise and keep busy doing the housework, and take some vitamins.

You're an idiot and so is the guy you know.
Obviously you are both control freaks and have no idea how anti depressants work, which can be different for everyone.

Well I don't think it matters what you prescribe, but what the Doctor prescribes. And if it meant that 'your girl' would stay healthy and all, I don't think it would hurt you too much to help out around the house and do some of the house work yourself. The less vitamins anyone takes, the better.

Anyhow. To actually answer your question, I wouldn't be with someone that didn't want me to be happy and healthy. I have a friend whos mother has been fighting depression for quite some time now, and her farther 'lets' her take an herbal anti-depression that she makes herself. It's safe and it helps in her fight

It wouldn't be up to my man as to whether or not I take anti-depressants. It's up to me and my doctor. I've been on anti-depressants before. Twice in my life I've had to go on meds. It took a long time to find the right combination of meds each time. Each person tolerates meds and their side effects differently. From what you're saying, your friend's wife might be on the wrong meds for her. That's something your friend can mention to his wife's doctor if he's concerned. Speaking from experience, friends and family are often the key that pushes a person to get help to treat their depression.

I am happy to say that for the past four years, I've been free of anti-depressants. I've been able to manage my depression either on my own or during my bad times, with the herbal supplement, St. Johns Wort.

Depression is a terrible thing. My message to anyone out there who is suffering with it and thinks there's no hope for them, that's just not true. Please, talk to some one... a friend, a counselor, a doctor. You don't have to suffer alone!

It sounds to me that your friend's wife could be suffering from a condition called bipolar syndrome. It can be dangerous for her not to take medication to treat her disease. Bipolar disorder is very different than common depression. Common depression does not include high and low stages. The most common form of medication for bipolar disorder is lithium. Most of the time when people are on lithium, they don't think they need to take their medication when they are in the manic stages. So if they cease taking it and it can be dangerous for them to do that.

I would like add that back in the 1950's, there was a famous author named Sylvia Plath who suffered from common depression and later committed suicide by placing her head into a gas oven. The question is, would that have happened if she had access to today's modern anti-depressant medications?

Finally graduated med school, did you?

To answer the question, he probably would object to my taking anti depressants as I am Not Depressed.

Then again, since I am not depresssed, I do not take anti-depressants. Therefore, this is not a conversation we have.

Don't you ever do anything fun with your girlfriends? Jeez, maybe she wouldn't be so depressed if you laid off a lot. Think about it.

Hope this helps.

"Let me?" My husband would encourage it, if it were prescribed. He would also help me monitor the side affects, so that no side affect got out of hand. If your wife needs them, be sure she understands the side affects and her
prescribing physician should have given her written information about the medication. Never, never stop a
medication cold turkey. Some have disasterous affects!
And some vitamins and supplements should never be taken with some prescribed meds. Make sure you know what
can and cannot be taken together.

There is obviously a reason if a doctor prescribes the medication. I don't think anyone else has the right to say that they can't be taken except for the doctor.
