I'm from the midwest, but I've been across this country from shore to shore.
My recommendation is either in the Wisconsin River valley or the upper Mississippi River valley.
You can't beat the fishing/boating opportunities, and the Mississippi River valley has a growing season that can be a full 4 weeks longer than up outside the valley. That's due to the sandy loam and the fact that it's a fairly protected area.
The crime rates are very low and if you're talented and resourceful, it's not hard to find a good job.

I live in South Carolina. The Southeast has beautiful weather and a lower cost of living than many other parts of the country.

North Idaho, its quiet, cool, it rains a lot, but we get awesome storms! Property tax is cheap, sales tax is only 6%, rednecks are funny, and in the winter time all the ppl from cali. and az. go home cuz they cant drive in the snow! I love it!!
