Yes he died in the 6th book. Apparently Dumbledore is shown to have a darker side in the last book.

Yes he did really die in book 6. He will NOT come back in the 7th book. Sorry but we gotta face the facts. If you've read the 6th book well you might think that snape is bad! he's not. look:"We’ve got a problem, Snape," said the lumpy Amycus, whose eyes and wand were fixed alike upon Dumbledore, "the boy doesn’t seem able-"
But somebody else had spoken Snape’s name, quite softly.
"Severus…"
The sound frightened Harry beyond anything he had experienced all evening. For the first time, Dumbledore was pleading. Snape said nothing, but walked forwards and pushed Malfoy roughly out of the way. Three Death Eaters fell back without a word. Even the werewolf seemed cowed. Snape gazed for a moment at Dumbledore, and there was revulsion and hatred etched in the harsh lines of his face.
"Severus… please…"
Snape raised his wand and pointed it directly at Dumbledore.
"Avada Kedavra!"
Snape is not a stupid man. On the contrary, he has proven himself to be quite bright over the course of the series. He arrived on the rooftop, saw Dumbledore defenseless, and Snape saw not one, but two broomsticks--- just as Draco Malfoy did.
Malfoy stepped forwards, glancing around quickly to check that he and Dumbledore were alone. His eyes fell upon the second broom.
"Who else is here?"
Snape is a smarter guy than Malfoy -- two broomsticks and only one rider? I contend that Snape knew or suspected right away that Harry Potter was somewhere nearby concealed underneath his Invisibility Cloak. With this information, Dumbledore’s pleading makes more sense. Dumbledore is not pleading for his own life; he is pleading for Snape to save Harry’s life! And Snape does exactly that by hurrying the Death Eaters off the rooftop immediately.
Harry felt as though he, too, were hurtling through space; it had not happened...it could not have happened...
"Out of here, quickly," said Snape.

that was part of dumbledore's murder and he is dead because he petrified harry so he would not move, harry was able to move however becaause the person who had cast it was indeed dead

Yes, I'm afraid that he did. JK Rowling woudn't insult out intelligence by bringing him back with a silly excuse. I can't see him returning in the 7th book. However his portrait will be in Hogwarts and people can talk to Dumbledore that way. Dumbledore had a brother who was mentioned in one of the books. Perhaps Dumbledore's brother may turn up?

My husband had an interesting theory...he said that although he thinks that Dumbledore really DID die in the 6th book, that Harry will inherit his Pensieve. And my husband thinks that Dumbledore may have left him some of his memories that would continue to educate Harry about Voldemort and how to fight him.

JK herself said that Dumbledore is dead *and not coming back to life*=( However, I know he'll play a big part in the 7th book. He left too many unanswered questions.

I think Dumbledore really did die in HBP, but I'm sure he'll come back in some form for the last book, be it in his Hogwarts portrait or maybe he left something behind for Harry to help guide Harry against Voldemort.

I was kinda wondering that myself....... I couldn't believe that Rowling just knocked him off like that! But I guess it was to show the irony that after Dumbledore defended Snape he turned around and killed him......very sad. I don't think he will come back though, that would almost be cheesy, ya know. However, I cannot wait to read the book!

He died in the 6th book so I don't think that he will come back in the 7th book. I could be wrong since anything is possible at Hogwarts.

im not sure. my cousin is buying the 6th book for me and ill have to find out myself. and if he actually does "die", it has to be a twist and im sure something interesting will be revealed in the 7th book. maybe he'll come back alive, or maybe he didn't really die. just like in x-men 3, the professor dies, yet he comes back alive (showed in a small clip in the credits).

he did die in the 6th book but you'll have to wait for the 7th book to come out to find out the rest :-)
