For me I look at the situation and say, "Is my voice going to be the tipping point here?" If I feel that I'm the only one upset by it or if it won't do a bit of good, I put my energies into something else.

I protested the immigration bill - I never got through to leave a message, but enough people apparently did because the phone lines pretty much collapsed under the load of calls.
As far as marching or carrying signs or standing on the side of the road and yelling - I feel these types of protests actually have a detrimental effect on whatever cause they are supporting or opposing. I generally view these people with little respect - and wonder to myself why they seem to have so much spare time.

I personally protest in little ways
1. I won't be watching the summer olympics next year in Beijing.
2. I write letters to Congressmen and Senators
If it's the grand scale protests you speak of, I don't do those because I don't have the time or money to spend 4 hours of my day holding a sign or some such thing.

No need to. It's a huge waste of time. Protests are useless. I will do my protesting at the ballot box or by contacting my elected officials.

Well, for me, it breaks down to a couple strong reasons, and a minor but relevant other one: 1) Too many protests walk all over OTHER people's rights; 2) I feel I know how to work the political system well enough to have influence on our legally constituted representatives in the way I wish; 3) Most things people protest, I don't care enough to work on - my acceptance level of things that do affect me is pretty broad.

I am a conservative and we don't protest. We leave that kind of stuff for the libs, who, on any given day, are protesting something. After awhile it gets a little tedious.

Because I have 2 jobs, a family and a life. I can't be bothered in activities that do no good. If I feel strongly on an issue I meet with my congressional delegates and/or write them.

A total waste of time. Nobody pays any attention to protests, except the news media.

For the sake of not looking like a complete idiot as so many far-out whack-jobs that give normal democrats a bad name... I simply avoid looking like an idiot.

Protest what? If you are referring to Iraq, it is because I understand the importance of engaging an enemy on foreign soil and keeping them on the defensive.
