Usually, You plug it into your USB port on your computer and it acts like a mini hard drive that you can carry around files on.

Amount of files is obviously dependent on the size of your USB drive.

They started around 16MB I think, but now have ones capable of holding several Gigabytes of data that are reasonably priced.

If you've used a digital camera, it works like the memory chip in there that stores your pictures. Technically you could store any file on those if your camera produced them.
