I was married in a non-denominational Christian church and I chose the wording for my ceremony. I just did research online and selected something I liked. The pastor didn't have any problem at all doing what I wanted. Perhaps in certain denominations there are strict rules. Good luck!

The love honor cherish/ love honor obey vows are not scriptural.
Most people don't use the word obey in their vows any more. This is no longer medieval times.
My husband and I wrote our vows to say:
Love, honor, cherish, and trust.

No sugar, I don't want you to lie to the Lord, either. LOL! We said "Love, honor and try to cooperate" and everyone laughed. Obey was not in our vows. No way.

I promised to "obey." Now I'm divorced.
In many churches the word has been eliminated, and if it hasn't in your's yet, write your own vows! Best of luck!

depending on your church, you should be able to choose your own vows, if that part bothers you, you should be able to leave it out; i'd bet that a lot of churches have re-worded it because it does offend a lot of folks. it comes from a more traditional time when women were expected to do what they were told and were the property of their husbands. i don't think it is necessary to take it too literally anymore, it's just an old-fashioned tradition, my husband and i joke about it and that's it, no need to take it too seriously.

Yes, I got married 1 year ago and none of those vows seemed to mean anything to my husband or me. We both messes up. Things were better before we said "I Do"

I made sure the pastor knew that part needed to be "Love, Honor, and Cherish...", I was not about to say obey!

If it's a minister / pastor you know... they should ask you what you want in your vows.
It should be between you & your hubby to be!
(Uh, besides, unfortunately, us women are suppose to be "submissive" to our husbands... However, they have their things they're to do too!!)
