You need:

A rock or basking area. I use two bricks stacked on top of each other. Don't use those floating docks, once the turtle grows heavy, it will sick when he is on it.

a light source: A strong bulb over the rock so he can dry off.

Food: Get turtle pellets at your pet store.

A filter. A strong one. Turtles carry salmonella, so you have to keep their cage very clean and wash your hands before and after touching your turtle.

Plants. Fake plants, real plants, doesn't matter. It makes them feel more at home.

These are the basics. There is other stuff out there that you can get (like a turtle cuttle bone or freeze dried shrimp.....yum) but you don't need those.

Also, turtles are attracted to the color red, so feeding them tomatoes might make their apatite bigger.

Well, you need to have a place for him to sit on (shore). He's going to need a few things like a heat source and probably some type of filtering system for the tank because turtles can be kind of messy in there. Go to the pet store as soon as possible and ask the reptile person to help you get him everything he needs. He's probably called a Red -eared Slider.

They take an awful lot of work and need very special care. Please see

http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/caresheet-red_ear_slider.htm

for complete care info. Basics are a 10 gallon sized tank for each 1 inch of shell length, a basking area to climb out of the water on, a basking lamp, thermometer to monitor basking temp (digital thermometer a must), a water heater, a water thermometer, a powerful water filter, a UVB bulb which must be within 12 inches of the basking area and changed every 6 months, and change the water very very very often. Feed a variety of foods in a separate tank to help keep things clean. Do not use plants or gravel in the tank. Gravel will cause fatal impactions.

As others reported, you wont discover floaters, you will detect a decrease fish count quantity. I accidently introuduced my daughter to the circle of lifestyles this type while she replace into 3, just about 4. We offered a turtle and a few tadpoles (just about to frog ingredient) for my mothers pond. Took them living house then went to scrub out the pond previously including each and everything in. properly we tossed all human beings (turtles, frog) right into a kiddie pool and it took all of three minutes for the pink eared slider (not poisenous or unlawful) to chunk the tadpole in 0.5 on an identical time as my 3 year old watched. She had named the turtle "Swim-away" and he or she reported "Mommy, Swim-away is a nasty turtle, she ate my froggie!" It replace into unhappy, she replace into forgiven, i replace into kicking myself for forgetting to seperate them. So there is yet another ingredient, we've been putting turtles right into a 1500 gallon pond, not a 20 gallon tank. A 20 gallon incredibly isn't suited for turtles until eventually they gained't be larger than a silver dollar, and in case you detect something like that permit me know! Turtles DO carry salmonella as do maximum reptiles and aphibians, the secret's to bathe up after dealing with them, constantly. friends of mine used a kiddie pool, filtration, gravel, flora (the turtles ate them) and mesh to cover the precise to have an indoor turtle pond, you will desire to attempt that in case you have your heart set on turtles yet do the study first. additionally, never do what I basically reported in case you have babies, it can be a undeniable drowning threat no rely how careful you think of you're able to be.

Yeah, but they need a place to dry out and sun themselves, so you have to create dry spot. Like a rock sticking out of the water they can climb on, or a plastic log or island. A light source would be good so they can dry off and warm up, too.
