America is obsessed with sex because it’s taboo. In other cultures it’s not taboo, and they’re not afraid to talk about it. STD’s and unwanted pregnancies are much lower because it’s not embarrassing to talk about it, to ask someone to wear a condom, or to ask someone’s sexual history.
Sex is a natural urge – all animals do it. Morality is a man-made tool to guide society, and is subjective. Morality in the 1800’s is a LOT different than Morality in 2007, and Morality in France is different than it is in Denmark or in America.
Perhaps the problem is not that people are not keeping up with morality, but instead that morality is not keeping up with the people. If a society acts a certain way, and everyone knows that it does, but it’s still taboo to talk about it, then there’s something wrong with the moral structure. The VAST majority of modern day American society believes that premarital sex is acceptable, and practices it, but it’s still frowned upon and we’re told that it’s wrong. Society has changed, and the puritanical values of the past no longer hold true – but the taboos of the past are taking longer to die. THAT’s the problem.

The reason why there are so many unwanted pregnancies and STI's is because teachers aren't allowed to tell pupils about any other form of contraception than abstinence. If young people aren't told that there are ways of preventing pregnancy other than abstinence then when they do decide to have sex (which is a natural thing to want to do, especially considering that throughout history women, if not men, started having sex around the age of 12, when they were married) they do not know that there is any way of preventing pregnancy or STI's.
It just reminds me of mean girls, where the gym teacher is saying "if you have sex you will get pregnant, and die".

I don't think America is more obsessed with sex than the rest of the world. I think America makes a bigger deal out of it though.
I remember when "Let's talk about Sex" by Salt N Pepa came out in 1990 they talked about banning it from radio stations just because it talked about sex. So, no, I don't think America is more obsessed, just make too much of a big deal about it.
And unwanted pregnancies and STD's is more a question of why people don't think of the consequences and never bother with any type of protection.

Maybe if Americans could take the stick out of their a**es, we could discuss sex in an open and honest way. No one wants to touch the topic with a ten foot pole--politicians, teachers, parents (not all), religious leaders. All they want to say is "it's bad". So then the only ideas of sex we, as Americans, are exposed to are the media images that glamourize sex without presenting any of the reality. If we talked realistically about sex--how it is NORMAL, but that there can be real physical and emotional consequences, maybe sex would lose of it's "forbidden fruit", rebellious glamour and people would think about it before just doing it.

America is obsessed with sex,
Good question, if you look back on our history people were taught that sex was bad and shouldn't happen till marrige. exc. Then the revolution happend and whether you go to a movie or watch at home you will see some intamate contact from kissing and more, eaven from our Entertainment Icons. Desinsitizing us to it not to mention peer pressur, However you have to understand that people by nature come with preprograming and needs they need to procreate and when it comes to needs they need shelter, food,Warmpth but eaven deeper then these basic needs is an eaven stronger one the Need for Companionship ... hope that helped...

I agree with you entirely. I am sickened by the way the U.S. exploits sexuality as commodity. It is merely a product of bourgeois Western decadence and sensationalism. I agree with the person whom stated "The US is a cesspool of decadent filth. The Soviet Union did not have this problem. People continue speaking of this problem being so prevalent in Europe. Yet, I cannot recall ever being exposed to open sexuality of this sort in Ukraine or Belarus." This is very very true. I detest this nation and plan to escape back home very soon, thankfully!

and whats wrong with that ?.... nothing at all ...it just shows that they are not as repressed by the b.s. teachings of the church any more .... and that can only be a good thing , as far as pregnancies and std's are concerned thats easy to stop ...its called a condom and slowly more people are using them,... but don't think that these are new(std's and preg) to this generation as they were even more prevalent and spread far wider back when the church ruled with all its b.s. fire and brimstone junk .... so much for morals in the old days .... there were none !

I tend to agree and disagree with your question. For starters I would like to say that other countries are just as "obsessed" with sex. (England, Germany, Netherlands, etc.)They for the most part just don't talk or exploit it as it seems to be done here. In the US, you can blame the biggest part of exploitation of the sex market to the advertisers out there, because they have a one tracked mind in the sense that "sex sells". This in turn raises the imagination level of our teens (and younger). Ad to that the amount of divorces due to the immaturity of adultery. The lists of reasoning could go on and on, but I'm sure that you get my point. Just my opinion.

It's not just America.
It's all around the world. Don't be naive.
Sex in the media is not responsible for the world being bad. Morals and sex ed begins at home. If the kids aren't taught them, they don't learn them.

Yeah, if only people had morals. I, for one, have very few morals. I am an asshole. I am shallow. I love sex. Still, it isn't because of sex that people get pregnant or get the clap, it's because of a disease. Ever heard of... stupidity? Sadly, it's incurable, and most people seem to be affected by it, at least to a lesser degree.
