This is for Harry Potter night at a bookstore, the kids are supposed to be able to do kind of a scavanger hunt, identifying what associate has which broom. The only suggestion anyone has had for me has been the Salem Witch Trials, which is not kid friendly. One coworker is doing the moon landings by putting dixie cups over bristles painted red; another is doing the sinking of the Titanic (way too morbid, in my opinion) by making his an oar. My only idea has been the founding of Athens, by making a trident being choked by an olive branch - which is way too esoteric, and obscure. I'm at a complete loss, and have less than 12 hours to figure it out.

I'm looking for something cheerful, that doesn't involve fire.

Tape a key to the bottom, use construction paper to make the head look like a kite, and Ben Franklin made history...

Another..

Tape the word "Missouri" on the short end, and "Pacific Ocean" on the head, and it's Lewis and Clark's Expedition. Maybe tape words describing landmarks or important people along the handle, like Missouri River, Rocky Mountains, Sacajawea, etc.

I hope this helps.

You could do the Boston Tea Party -
paint the bristles blue and brown or even stick tea bags on them...lol

Then, using poster board, cut out a huge boat looking thing and use the handle of the broom as the mast and you and even use some cloth to make a sail and then just make people on there dumping out the "tea"

Put a powder blue bell skirt over the bristle end(should be easy to sew, pucker at top to create an outward bell shape) then get some cotton balls for a pompador type hairstyle
make it look like marie antoinette

or bag the bristle part with burlap sack and write on it "TEA" in big black letters then add feathers to the top and wrap the handle with faux leather(available at craft stores and wal-mart) and make a tag coming off the tip of the handle(like tea bag tags) and write "England Taxes" on it in old english lettering.
it would represent the Boston Tea party

How about boxes labelled TEA hung from the broom to represent the Boston Tea Party? Link with Independence Day? or a Southern flag to represent the Civil War? I know it's morbid, but kids love battles, don't they? I live in the UK so american history is not my strong point, but hope this helps.

burn all the bristles off of it. and call it the Chicago fire, or the burning of Rome...or anything else. The important thing is that you have fun burning the broom, but dont burn down the house! Make sure your mommy or daddy is there to monitor you.

Oh, wait, you ARE the mommy or daddy. My bad.

Good luck, wizards in the past were considered demon spawn, or hell brought.

Look in history books, though, you might find a winner there, just clip and paste the demon next to it as your own picture......
