We don't know. Perhaps it came into existence at the big bang and was part of God's creation of the physical universe. Perhaps it has always existed. The same question can be asked about space, with the same possible answers. Einstein would say that's just one question, since he considered spacetime as a single entity. The question isn't 'pragmatic' in the sense that we can make predictions and tests to answer the question or confirm hypotheses.

And no, Genesis 1:1 doesn't answer the question. It speaks only of the physical universe, not spacetime itself.

Right at the moment the "big bang" occurred. This "bang" was a period of rapid inflation, in which a compact ball of energy the size of a marble expanded to a sphere with a radius about that of the solar system. This only took a few seconds.

That is a very theoretical guestion which also depends on a strict defination of time. Time as in the universe has been dated back to 14 billion years. Time as in the earth being in existant, I think only 5 billion. Time as in human's, maybe a couple hundred thousand years. And time as when we start to keep count, couple of thousand of years, about 5-6000 years at most. My guess would be around a few hundred to a thousand years before the greeks.

Then there is also the guestion of who is keeping the time and their measurement, obviously we measure time based on the preceptions that we developed from being on earth, but lets say there is another species capable of the intellect to keep track of time on another planet in another galaxy then most likely their unit of time would differ most likely in accord to how long it takes their planet to revolve around their sun. Which I know at this point I sound like a babbling retard, but I've always wondered if there was a possible way to calculate a complete universal time. If this was done then you would still need to keep track of your planetary time as it would suit you best on your day to day needs.

Time began with the Big Bang. If you're interested in this sort of stuff, you may want to read "The Fabric of the Cosmos" by Brian Greene. That's all about time.

Hmmmmm...

I have two thoughts.

1-It began just -before- everything else. Time had to happen just prior because, otherwise, there would be no first instant for everything to be -in-.

or

2-Time is an abstraction, there is no "time" force or principle, it is just a way of thinking that helps our small minds understand a very complex universe. Then time didn't exist until we became sophisticated enough to perceive that cause preceeded effect.

It didn't. Time has always existed, otherwise a cause and effect creating the Universe would be impossible.

However, God exists outside of time, so He may have created time at some point. Tough stuff to wrap our brains around here.

When the universe began. That would be somewhere around during the big bang.
