I'm trying to help my 5th grader with his math homework and I can't! Can anyone please post basic information about what number cubes are and why they are sometimes called seven cubes? Thanks for your help.

"seven cubed" means seven to the third power, or 7*7*7, or 7^3, which equals 343.

In general, "cubed" or "the cube of a number" means that number to the third power. The third power means multiply three copies of that number: n*n*n

Just a guess, but I think you are referring to dice, cubes with the numbers 1 through 6 represented on the faces, one number to a face.

gugliamo00 pointed out what I'd forgotten, the opposite faces total seven, e.g. 1 is opposite 6, 2 is opposite 5 and 3 is opposite 4.

They might be called seven cubes because if two are thrown at a time, the total of the two upright faces equals 7 more often than any other combination.

Ok... Got it...

A "number cube" is a standard die... like in games of chance. Guess educators are afraid these kids will wind up in back of the school shooting craps...

Anyway. the standard die has the on its faces the values 1 through 6. They are arranged in such a way that the values on opposite faces add up to 7... hence "seven cubes." But, don't ask me why. It's not a mathematical term. Probably dreamed up by some liberal arts major who didn't know anything about math.
