I'm about to get a 2000 Trans Am, and I hear that in order not to lose any horsepower, i have to use atleast 92 octane gas (hopefully not true). I currently go to a place that i think uses 87-89 octane. Should I use a booster in my car to get all the performance out of it?

First, drive the car
drive a a fairly slow rat of speed (30 or so) and press the accellerator. Do not press it hard enough for the transmission to shift, but hard enough to load the engine. listen carefully to the engine. If you hear 1 or 2 clicks from the valves, or no clicking at all, octane booster is not required. If the engine makes a lot of clicks, add octane booster to tank.
Octane booster makes the gasoline burn more slowly, therefore preventing the pressure in the cyclinder from becoming to great too fast and pushing the valves shut before they are ready. It also causes the gasoline to build higher pressures and more heat in the engine. Use with caution.
I use toluene to boost mine from 89 to 102 octane, but I run it on the dragstrip only, street use can destroy an engine.

Using Octane Booster

If you had the ability to transport yourself back in time to 1966 and check the octane rating on gas then you would find that todays octane on the high grade gasoline is not even close to the lowest grade octane back then. The fella 2 spots up had it right when he said its the fuels resistance to burn, but if you are not hearing any pinging under a load, then it may not be as useful to you as you hope. Certainly the cost of the booster will offset any gain in fuel mileage you gain as well.

Octane booster will not harm your Engine or fuel pump nor will it give your car any more horse power. if you have any problem with detonation /pinging/ noise at 30 or 50 mph it might fix that. there are no benefits just wasting your money. I hope this helped good luck.

use what is called for in your owners manual or listed on your car the factory engine is set to burn a certain octane if you use any thing above that you are just throwing money away octane doesn't always mean horsepower it depends what your engine is tuned for
