Personally I prefer the Petrof -- it is handcrafted, and very well made, with a unique tone. Kawai is mass-produced in Japan, and their actions are made with varying amounts of ABS plastic. I cannot fathom why a piano manufacturer would do that. I find them generally too bright

Otherwise they make a decent instrument -- but I'd buy Boston before I'd buy Kawai. Boston is made by Kawai but designed by Steinway, and there is NO plastic in the action.

It really all depends on the individual instrument and the kind of maintenance it has received if it's not brand new. I personally don't really trust Petrof that much. First of all the sound is not that spetacular like they want you to believe. my experiences were that they sounded decent in the beginning but over time, lots and lots problems appeared like crazy. and you wonder what kind of hand-made quality it really is.
I found Kawais more even in terms of the overall quality. Yes they are made by machines but for some reason, I have played, owned and heard enough Kawais that have beautiful and delicate tones that I would recommend them over petrof.

Get the latest edition of the Larry Fine book that rates pianos. You will learn much, and have a far more detailed set of reasons WHY people chose what they do.
