Read, read, read. Not only do you get to familiarize yourself with new words the more you come across them, but you can also see how they are used in context. This is way better than say, looking over and memorizing a list of words because you can see how the words are used.
Also, when you learn new words, try to incorporate their use in your daily speech. This will help your memory because you didn't just read about the word, you used it yourself. Good luck.

The best way is to read, read, read, and then read again. If you find reading boring, find a subject matter that excites you and read about it. Also, copy any words that you don't know in a notebook. Look up these words in a dictionary to be sure you understand the meaning. Be especially sure that you understand the definition of the word as it was used in the sentence.

I strongly recommend using an online dictionary like the one at Yahoo or www.m-w.com. That way, you can actually hear the pronunciation of the word, plus any variations of pronunciation. Begin using the words you learn immediately. Think about it, if you just learned one new word a day, every day for a year, you'd have an arsenal of hundreds of words in your vocabulary!
Good luck

Read. And look up the words you don't know in the dictionary. When you're thinking of a word, have a thesaurus nearby so you can find a better word for it.
