I need to know how to kill grass in a backyard. I already know gasoline does, but i was looking for a safer alternative. It would help if what killed the grass was a common household item.

What do you mean by not visible? Dead grass is very visible.

Do not use salt, it will poison the soil and make it difficult to grow anything else. Round Up is the safest pesticide to use. Boiling water may work, but it will take a lot. Covering with a tarp will work, will take 4-6 weeks.

What do you plan on doing with the yard, once the grass is gone and the soil is bare, weeds will show up in a few days.

Well as long as you're not living in a very dry country: Water the grass with salty water several times. Dilute salt in moderate concentration like 1 ounce (or more) for 4-5 gallons of water. The grass will turn yellow and dried in a few days. Over time, rain and watering with fresh water will wash the salt away. Careful not to put too much salt, the more concentration you pour the more infertile the soil.

The key words you used in your question are "safer alternative". That being said, the Department of Agriculture would recommend that if you should use a man made product; try a Vegetation Control.

Vegetation Control manages unwanted and nuisance vegetation in and around your landscape. This is performed in an economical, expeditious, and environmentally conscious process. It's perfect for Lawns that require complete renovation in specific areas before continuing with over-seeding or top dressing. Basically it will Eliminate plants right down to the roots.

I would suggest calling a local Lawn maintenance company that deals with fertilizer applications. Simply tell them your looking for a Vegetation control; the average cost should be around $50.00 to $60.00

Hope that helps,

um. If you don't want it to be visible... I'm wondering whose lawn you're doing in. Note that if the owner of the lawn would not want his/her lawn killed, this would be called vandalism, which would not be legal or ethical.

If it is your own lawn, or one where the owner actually wants the grass dead, the tarp is the best method. Those huge blue tarps, left on a lawn for only a few days in the heat of the summer, will kill the grass off. Other methods leave the area poisoned or inhospitable to future plantings.

Rock Salt will kill it. The old fashion type that used to be used to melt snow works quite well. But you wont be able to grow anything there for a while.
If you have pets in the are dissolve in water then spray grass. May take a couple of tries depending on strength of mixture.

You could get some type of covering... like a tarp? And drape it over the grass you want to kill.... it will not get any sun or water and will die really fast!

This is a very safe way to do it.

Hope this helps :)

Simple answer. Boiling water. Pour it on your grass and it will die. It's cheap and easy. Good luck!
