I know I'm whining, but what the heck? While there might be some stupid questions out there, there are real ones too. Some of the answers the real questions get are just plain blind foolishness. I realize car guys can have some input, but PLEASE understand that motorcycles ARE different.

brek69amx, did you read the question in it's entirety? Your answer is a perfect example of my complaint.

FWIW, I know which muffler actually uses bearings.

1978 Honda XL350 - it was on the left side of the motorcycle. Kind of hard to describe the exact location, but it was easily accessible. The first thing I did on getting that bike was to cut out the distributor innards and install a hall effect spark timer. I opened it up a few more times when the sensor rotor slipped ("vibratite" is good but doesn't last forever).

Haven't seen one since. I guess electronic ignition systems are better.

There probably isn't one. Most motorcycles run distributorless ignitions with the coils triggered by a mechanism on the crankshaft. Distributors on motorcycles are very rare.

What kind of vehiccle? A lot of newer vehicles do not have a distributor. Follow a plug wire from a plug to the other end and there you will see either a distributor cap or a coil pack.
