I have a year until the trip, so I am looking for occasional deals or random deals, or advice on whether to fly from Chicago to NY or Chicago to London or Europe somewhere, or just straight through? Thanks!

Not knowing your dates, I just checked on travelocity.com
for October, since June 15 to sept. 15 is high season, it cost $300 or $400 more than off season.
In october chicago to london was about $724 on virgin,
from NYC to Longon was about $624, so it's probably good to just go from chi town unless you want to stop in ny.
One thing i like to do is search for multiple destination tickets on expedia or travelocity.
In december, i flew Miami to amstredam,
then returned from madrid to miami, I took trains in between and didn't have to return to Amsterdam.
It was cheaper than a roundtrip to either city!!!
Also play around with the days of the week. sometime there's a hundred $$ difference from one day to the next.

I fly from Munich to NYC a lot. I've found the best deals to be either with KLM (AMS-NYC) or with IBERIA (Madrid-NYC)
The return flight costs somewhere between 285 and 385 Euros
A return flight Ams-Madrid presently costs arount 45 Euros if you can plan in time.
Friends of mine usually catch an AIR CHINA that stops over in Frankfurt but I'm not too keen on that carrier.
Other friends fly ICELAND AIR which is supposed to be the cheapest but also most uncomfortable way with a very long stopover in Rikyavik
