Their focus groups told them it may result in more votes.

Of course it's pandering. Remember with Clinton was president, he put Janet Reno in as attorney General, then she turned around, with the clintons backing, and stated that Christians, and any one who attended church regularly, where a cult.
Wanna see pandering? watch Hillary give talks in different parts of the country, when in an area with a large black population, she tries to "talk like a black person" when in a jewish area, she tries to sound jewish. This from the person that stole the dishware and stuff from the white house when they got voted out. How about how she and Bill hated the military so much they refused to allow the marine honor guard to wear uniforms around them. Or that since they were voted out, and they moved, they are provided protection for life at tax payer expense, BUT, they are RENTING the security (that you and I are paying for) housing on their property that equals the million dollar plus house payment the clintons have each year. So, you and I are paying for their multi million dollar house. I could go on, but you either already know these things, or you don't want to believe them. Pandering, you bet. Not that my party doesn't do sneakiy things too, but I still think as long as we are stuck with the current 2 party system, I'll remain a liberal conservative republican rather than a tax and spend democrat.

It is not all of a sudden. Obviously the filter through which you view the world has been fogged up in places. You are forgiven. We Christians are all about forgiveness. As for pandering, not on the issue of Christianity they are not. That would be the religious right. They are pandering and being pandered to by the other side who see them as a last gasp hope of getting some votes next year.

If a politician is claiming jesus it is nothing more than pandering for the religious right wing vote and nothing more.

This goes for Dem's and republicans.

God has no political affiliation.

It is both: pandering AND authentic.

Most of these people, like most Americans in general, are religious deep down inside. They just don't wear their religion on their sleeves like more conservative people. BUT... they are definitely bringing it out more publicly for the vote. No doubt.

I don't think they're all of a sudden "getting religion". I think they are realizing that keeping it private tends to lose you elections. That is - keeping it private makes you seem somehow against "family values", whatever that means.

Personally, the idea that one would chose an leader based on his religion is apalling - To me that is BEGGING for war. That is, someone who puts personal beliefs in something as unprovable as God is just as likely to be able to justify mortal action on the basis of unproven rumor.

Most people in the US *INCLUDING* Democrats, believe in God in some form. Most moderate Americans believe that judging somebody with purely religious standards is anti-American. That is, many of our immigrants were fleeing religious tyrany and to force religion down the throats of the general public begins to look like a return to the bad-old-days.

However, there are a few loud ones that have made it a litmus test for how electable someone is.

That's apalling... I wonder how many really good leaders out there would never be elected because they don't believe in God, or simply don't know.

The climate is so corrosive that anyone who fits into that category is either not in public office, lies about it or avoids the subject entirely.

Hitler was religious - it is no guarentee that someone will be good for the country. Indeed, there is no insanity like that of the jihad.

Pandering to the credulous. Bad idea.

Authentic. The Democrats have always been as religious as the conservatives. They also felt that it was private and not a matter for government.

After taking years of PR beatings by hypcritical conservatives who use religion as a cynical prop, while living lives completely the opposite of their sanctimonious preaching, they decided it would be best to let people know where they actually stand.

Ever since the media and all the posters say that "religious" people voted Bush in for a second term, the Dems have been trying to manipulate the vote by saying "Oh - we are Christians also!!"

Sad fact is - many people will believe them.

After the last presidential election i heard a statistic that something like 70% of voters said that moral ethics influenced their decision. So maybe if the dems pretend to be interested in religion and ethics..........
