Chess is the best board game ever invented. It has been played by kings and pauper dating from the 15th (1400's) century. It is complicated, strategic and you have to use your mind rather than rely on the roll of dice.

Another ancient game I enjoy is Mancala. This can be played anywhere if you can find some stones and put some holes in the ground. Playing involves moving the stones counter-clockwise into your home and capturing stones on you opponents side. It's easy to learn but difficult to master.

The third on that is ancient and VERY difficult to master is GO. It is an East Asian game where you place white and black pieces on a 19x19 matrix board, trying to surround your opponent's pieces and capture them. VERY difficult to master. I can play but not very well.

Below are links to these games.

I have a LOT of them, but my current favorites are from a company called Days of Wonder. The games are BatteLore (medieval/fantasy battles) and Ticket to Ride (trains).

Chess, by a mile.
The best intellectual game ever, if you ask me.

If I had to name others, I'd say Risk in #2, and Scrabble in #3.
