Unhook both battery leads. The starter is located on the passenger side of the bell housing. First remove the positive cable from the solenoid and the two small wires from each side of the solenoid. Remove the tin shield from the bottom of the bell housing. Two long bolts need to be removed from the bottom of the starter frame. Be careful not to loose any starter shims that may be placed between the starter and the block or bellhousing.
*** Be sure to check the space between the Bendix shaft and the ring gear when the new starter is bolted beck on. No two starter frames are exactly alike. This gap should be 1/8 in. Check it with a piece of 1/8 hardware stock or the driven end of a clean drill bit. This bit of checking ensures proper starter drive (Bendix) engagement and release. Any auto parts store has starter spacers for this important adjustment.

1. Disconnect battery
2. Raise and support vehicle
3. Disconnect starter solenoid wires
4. Remove cover and disconnect starter at brush end
5. Remove skid plate
6. Remove 2 brake-line to cross-member brackets
7. Remove 6 cross-member bolts and remove cross-member
8. Remove transmission cooler line to flywheel bracket
9. Remove brace rod to flywheel housing
10. Remove lower flywheel housing (if necessary)
11. Remove starter bolts and note the number of and location of all starter shims!
12. To install just reverse the steps above.

These are not as easy as some. If you are not a mechanically inclined person I would say go to a mechanic.
