that really depends. men are expected to, and many do to their own misery. Women are not so when they do there can be significant social backlash. I think the only people who should are those on either side of the gender fence who find that to be the most fulfilling thing for them.

I don't think gender has much to do with it. Some women might give career a priority if they think they may have to support themselves and/or their children, or prove to the men in their lives that they can also be as successful. And let's face it -- some people put careers ahead of everything else because that's where the money is. That applies to men and women alike.

Men always do and have been expected to.They are not considered selfish when doing so either.
Women will miss work if a child is sick to stay home and care for them and that is what society expects. That is why women find it harder to get ahead with their career choices especially in areas such as law.

Screw career. You need money to live, so you get it. Past that, it's all about freedom.
If you want real money, working for someone isn't the way to get it, anyway. How do you think the owner of the company you work for became the owner the company? Well, the answer isn't 'by working for someone'
Work to live, don't live to work. Wise words.
Overall I don't think it has to do with gender.

Men - because they often measure self worth (and the value of other men) by what they do for a living (and how much money they make). While this is not universally true for all men, it is true enough that I am willing to make this generalization.

Men, since they are taught to prioritize career, while women are taught to prioritize family. But some women put career first (i.e. me) and some men put family first (i.e. people I know).
