Because Texans have a saying. "Smile when you say that, Pardner." And, if you're too lazy to use smileys, or the forum doesn't support them--it's the only way to show that you are smiling ;p.
And because some people like to pretend they have a sense of humor. But you can still usually tell that they didn't get it.

Ironically you're doing the exact same as the question, but people put 'lol' because in the age of bulls**t, people not only begin to use more internet slang, they also do it in real world, but the reason is because at this stage, we are more used to the internet

Obviously, you aren't talking to anyone who can actually form an intelligent well-thought out sentence without using internet slang as a crutch to cover up their sad and pathetic inability to pay attention in english class... lol.

I have no idea. I avoid it as much as I can though. Maybe it's just habit or a typing spasm. I went to high school with a girl who wrote it all the time. She even said it aloud on occasion!

LoL Why is this in the M&F section? LoL
In all seriousness though, it IS annoying. It's like who you're typing too doesn't even see the punchline of their own joke coming...it's like....whoah! LAWLZ

Its an easy way to say something when you really dont have anything to say or when its a bit odd or not really a funny conversation. Also to express that you are laughing or happy even if your not.

Me and freinds do that sometimes when we are bored, but I doubt those people are ALWAYS bored. But, sometimes we put LOL for no reason.
