I always balk when someone asks how much the job pays. It takes everything you thought about and more. The hours are relentless, no vacations, no sleep, no recreation, the college cost alone is inhibiting, and the desire has to make you grind your teeth. If you have more determination than anyone else you ever knew, then maybe you can make it. But it takes 12 long hard years and then some, and you have to have a strong stomach and a mind for science. If you only care about the money, you will never make it. You have to Keep Your Eye on the Prize at all times. The Prize is Not the money because you will spend all you want of that soon enough. And studying and educating yourself will never end. Just start in that direction and you may branch off around your Masters Degree into something that doesn't take over your life as much as being a doctor will. Many people are much happier having found another path along the way.

I'm not a doctor, but I can tell you there are pros and cons in every profession. You seem to be undecided at this time, so I would suggest that you obtain as much information as you can. Most doctors are too busy to tell you about their experiences and finances, etc., but you can probably find a lot of information on websites. I think it takes a very dedicated and humanitarian type person to go into the medical profession, and you're right about the lengthy educational process. So be absolutely sure before you make any commitments. Meantime, explore other occupations in the medical field, such as nursing, technicians, paramedic, scientific research, etc. Good luck!

How about a physician's assistant (this is very different than a medical assisitant, do some research into it), a pharmacologist, or some sort of technican? A psycholigist or counselor? What about some type of research specialist? What about marine biology? Good luck to you!
