I was taking my gsxr to class today when I stalled it going out of the parking gate. I couldnt get it to start back up again without holding the throttle open... and I am thinking of the air filter because I was supposed to change it 1200 miles ago. Does this sound like something caused by a clogged air filter?

Yes, that can be done by an air filter. When your air filter is dirty, it makes it tough to get fresh clean air into your engine which can make it run rough and be hard to start. Change your air filter, they cost $8.

Black sooty spark plugs. (rich mixture caused by air starvation)
Hold the filter up to the light... You should be able to see light through it.
When you hold the throttle wide open it allows more air into the engine. Yes, you could have a dirty air filter - or a carb problem. A stuck float, or plugged jet could also cause those symptoms. Be sure to change your fuel filter when you change your air filter.

If your car is starting to send black smoke out of the exhaust it is definitely time. Pull the air filter and hold a flashlight to it if you can see a good light it is fine if not get it changed. or pull it out and bang against your hand if allot if dirt comes out change it. Lat but not least, every 15,000 miles

poor throttle response or a booging of engine, if it is clogged it isnt letting the engine breath properly and its basically gagging for more air, since it takes about 2 seconds to pull the filter and look at it thats what i would reccomend

Air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotors are all normal wear and tear maintenance items, they are tracked by the mileage intervals as to time for replacement.

If you really want to know if your air filter is bad, your car will run sluggish. But running sluggish can be caused by many reasons, not just air filter.

You can physically take out the air filter from your car and examine it using common sense to determine if it is clogged to the point that it needs replacing or washing.

Good Luck.

When in doubt, check it out.
It's not that big of a job to get to the air cleaner.
Remove the seat, fuel tank and air box cover.

I would say just take it out of the box and look at it. If it looks dirty replace it - they are pretty cheap. If that doesn't fix your problem then you know you can cross it off your list and look elsewhere for a malfunction.

the best time to change an air filter is with every tune up, when your air filter is dirty your car will hesitate to speed when you hit the gas pedal.
