my father.......the radio was always on when I was growing up........he listened to oldies and classic rock.....my taste, early on was based on that. While kids my age were listening to NKOTB and Debbie Gibson, I was rocking out to the Doors and Zeppelin.

As I got older, I explored all different kinds and genres, some I liked, some I didn't..........friends gave recommendations, but they didn't influence me......I like what I like

To be honest my parents were my first main source of music taste. My mom absolutely despises of rap and hip hop, I'm clearly not a fan of it myself but there are a few songs from it that I like but anyways then my second source would have been other kids when I was growing up, it was like you hear one kid listening to a song and then everyone else is doing it. But as for right now my main source if I had to pick one would be other musician's input on songs. I'm very musically inclined and input from other musicians is some of the best input you can get sometimes and through them I've developed a much deeper taste and appreciation for music as a whole. Without them there really wouldn't be anyone to say what music is good and what is bad because thye know what they're saying and can break down the entire song or album so that you can really look at it and make a decision for yourself.

I'd have to say my older siblings (3 brothers and 1 sister). Each had their own tastes, and I ended up being introduced to a wide variety of music as a result. By the time I was 12 I had been introduced to the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, The Guess Who, The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, Kraftwerk, New Wave, and even hardcore punk .

Discovering college radio in my early teens certainly changed things for me more than anything else. I was exposed to all sorts of music that I never even knew existed. Music from all over the world...Asia, Africa, South America, etc, as well as 'unknown' artists from right here in America (from a variety of genres). To this day if I want to hear some really interesting music I have to tune in to college radio stations. That's about the only place I'm going to hear it.

My friends older brother in 9th grade. He was into hardcore and post-punk music back in 1982. He gave me several mix tapes of different bands like Black Flag, REM, Velvet Underground, Buzzcocks and New Order. I quickly started shopping smaller local record stores for these bands and found other similar ones. Funny, before the internet and tons of music magazine, you had to often buy the album before even hearing the band. i struck out allot, but found some bands that i still listen today like REM, VU, The Clash, Joy Divsion and Bauhaus...

I had no influence, but I only listen to people who studied music... I don't have any respect for anyone else because its regurgitated propoganda marketing BS. It's not real music, it's only a money making "business" and when you've made music a business, you've corrupted a gifted art....nuff said.

PS - I love making tons of cash doing what I do, but I never set out for that as my main goal, it was to be happy and do what I loved!

Weird answer but the VH1 "I Love the 80s" shows. I worked in a music store a few years ago and I just loved every 80s hit. I found myself always wanting more. Now I have like 700 80s hits on my computer!

The Sex Pisols. The first first wave punk band I heard and their songs "God Save the Queen" and "Anarchy In The UK" started me on a deep plunge into punk, even though I didn't care for either song the first few times I heard them. To their credit I only listened to those two songs because I read about them on the Rolling Stone Magazine website.

Have to say my big brother.. he's 6 years older than me, and he was listening to Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin back in the 70s when I was just a wee lad listening to KISS. Then he gave me my first Rush album when I was like 13. I've been rockin' my a** off ever since.
