Suppose you were corresponding with a friend of indeterminate age via the Internet. You want to get to know this friend better. One option is to simply ask for a cleverly-encrypted Yahoo Messenger screen-name or MySpace URL. But that's not what you are looking for. So instead, you just seek Answers. What questions do you ask this person?

According to YA guidelines, you're not supposed to ask personal questions. However, if you were doing this on YA, you could give clues to your identity and if the person were interested, you might get clues back. However, it can't be a one-way street. You would need to say something about yourself first to determine if that person would want to continue corresponding with you.

One thing that always seems best is to ask what people like to do.

This gives a sense of things in common.

Hobbies is another one, location is harder because on Yahoo Answers not as many willing to publicly give an address or town.

Why don't you try asking that friend if you want to be pen pals and exchange emails if that friend want to be
