The Toyota Prius is a hybrid. It seems to be the vehicle of choice for hybrids. A Hybrid has an electric motor and batteries. When you are in the city it usually runs on the electric motor and therefore does not pollute. It also has a small gasoline engine. When the batteries need charging the gas engine kicks in. The most exciting thing about the Prius is that you can get a solar cell accesory panel for the Prius so that you can basically drive for free! If you get a chance watch the movie, "Who Killed the Electric Car?" It is showing on cable.

Hybrids cars are vehicles that run on more than one power source, such as gas and electric or diesel and electric. These cars have a gas or diesel engine AND an electric motor. The gas or diesel engine is used when high power is needed and have the ability to charge the electric engines batteries. In some vehicles braking also charges the batteries. When putzing around town , in traffic, or going downhill the electric motor kicks in. The benefit of having both engines is that you still have all the power of a gas/diesel engine and the economy of the electric without having to charge the batteries. There are also vehicles that can run on two fuel sources such as gasoline and ethanol. Some consider these hybrids as well.

Run on electronic motors and combustion engines. Personally, i think they're rubbish. They are overpriced, and cost a hell of a lot to maintain. More than just a normal car. Don't get one. Or at least wait until the market has been developed a lot more. in my opinion, they're still in "beta" mode.
I will say that what Lexus is doing with them is kind of cool. Rather than using them as a fuel saver, they use the high torque of the electric motors COMBINED with the high horsepower of their engines to create a relatively practical performance car for a practical price. But i don't believe they're out on the market yet, again, still in development.

Hybrid cars run on both gasoline and battery power, the battery is usually in use when you are at very low speeds during city driving, when the gasoline engine is running the batteries that run the electric motor get recharged

Hybrid cars are cars the run on gasoline but start using a battery cell. When you are at a stop the motor stops and the starts up again when you get back on the gas pedal. It doesn't rely on a standard starter and idling system saving fuel in return.
