There are two minerals which are commonly referred to as Jade. One is nephrite - often called New Zealand jade. Yours, having a Kiwi on it sounds a very likely candidate for this type. This material is not very valuable and can be bought for $1 per gram with no problem. If it has a high degree of transparency this price can be higher.
The other type is Jadeite or true jade. This material is far more costly and, depending on quality can be among the most expensive gems in the world. Recently a single strand necklace of 27 beads 14mm. dia. sold for a record price of $9.3 million at auction.
Take your piece to a dealer for a valuation as it is probably worth more as souvenir of New Zealand than it is as a piece of nephrite.

Now the fellow with the answer depicting the two different types of Jade is your best answer. By all means go get it appraised. Your university could have enough to begin an early childhood Renewable Energy education program.

The silver kiwi rings a bell! I don't remember what it was about. If I can remember right it is some sort of seal of authenticity.

There are several different types of jade and some are more valuable than others. Your best best is to have it appraised at an auction house or professional jeweler's.
