Freshwater sharks like Rainbow and Redtailed Sharks grow to be about 6 inches long and require a 20 gallon tank (NO LESS!). They are aggressive towards other slow moving fish and fish that are not territorial (Mollies, Platties and Guppies will all be eaten). Add some information like what tank size, what other fish you have, and how many of each fish.

There are no freshwater sharks that will stay small.

It also depends on what species you are getting.
But it depends on the species. please update your qquestion with the species.

The common one, ID or irridencent sharks will grow large, and they will grow way to large for home aquariums. My largest was over 27 inches and it would once and awhile eat small fish.

Bala or silver sharks are the next common, they will grow about 12-15 inches and like to school, so a big school andlarge fish need a big tank. They wont usually eatfish, but they are too large for smaller tanks.

Red tailed sharks are small, usually about 5-6 inches, and they wont usually bother other fishes.

Edit: im aplogize, my keyboard has been on the fritz the past few days and i type faster than it is pocesseing so some how it skipped the word grow.

Red-tailed BLACK sharks are usually peaceful but might eat your smaller fish, i have had some and they are great to look at.

But if you are going to a local fish store and they are talking about a red-tailed catfish you will need a 300g tank. Make sure you dont get a red-tailed catfish.

Most catfish are called "fresh water sharks"

Don't get a monster catfish do research before a purchase and be careful fo rmislabeled catfish.

Depends on the species. Bala sharks are actually a type of minnow, and while they are generally non-agressive, they will eat anything they can fit in their mouths. They also need to be in schools of at least 3, and they can grow up to 13 inches, so you need a REALLY big tank to keep bala sharks.
