i have never seen them on any other trailer i have had. what are they for and are they necessary. i dont really see a reason for them. i have read that they should be siliconed on with rtv before putting on the hub but it doesnt seem to fit the seal as well as it does without

im not sure i am making this clear. the wear sleeve goes at the inner most part of the spindle. right where the seal would ride. there is a seal on one side and the other has none. the bearing kit i am using is the tie down super lube which states in the instructions found on the web at http://www.tiedown.com/pdf/c179.pdf
i checked my spindles and they look fine with no grooves. seals fit tight without. should i get new sleeves or should i go without. check the link i included and it shows exactly what i have

The wear sleave is actually part of a two piece stemco seal. If you are replacing the two piece stemco seals with another brand name or stemco one piece seals, you must remove the sleave. Make sure the spindle is clean and free of rust and burrs and a one piece seal will work fine.

If you are replacing them with two piece seals, you must use the wear sleeves and they must be installed (pressed on) with a sleeve driver.

They are called a Speedy Sleeve and were installed to cover wear grooves in the spindle caused from a previous dirty seal lip or loose bearing. They are shrink fit and very thin walled so a standard seal will work on them, no problem. No rtv needed either. If they are loose on the spindle you need to replace them.

Additionally.
If the sleeve easily comes off the spindle it needs to be replaced or it may spin inside the seal causing damage to the spindle. If the spindle does not show any grooves or damage I would guess that someone put the sleeve on before as a precaution and you should be fine just leaving if off.

Do they cover the seal area only or the inner race area too?
I have never seen sleeves come with seals, but I am not saying that they don't, I just never saw it.
Put I have seen them installed in areas that have damage where the seal runs, usually cased by abrasives attracted to the grease at the mouth of the seal or running with a bearing out will sometimes let the hub cut into that area. If you could measure the seal area with some calipers I'm sure the supplier could tell you if the seals you have will fit.
Good luck

There is a darn good reason for them! First you probably have soft metal in the shafts, Second your bearings will not fit right without them. They have to be making the shaft larger for the bearings and a tighter fit for your seal.
