Each stadium has their own set of rules dealing with roofs, in play areas.

Darryl Strawberry hit the roof of Olympic Stadium, but it was counted as a double.

Each ballpark has its own ground rules. In Tampa Bay it is ruled a ground rule double if the ball hits the dome in fair territory. The only exception to that would be if the ball hit the dome or some other structure after it cleared the fence in fair territory, in that case it would be a home run. When the managers and the umpires meet at the beginning of each game the ground rules for that ballpark are reviewed and the manager and every player is aware, or should be aware, of those rules.

That depends on what the ground rules are at the dome. In Tampa, I believe it is a ground rule double. In Minnesota, a ball striking the roof or other object from the roof is considered foul, regardless of where it is.

These people are almost right. There are different ground rules in some parks, including Tropicana (where the Rays play) but the rule there is that it is at the umpire's discretion. If the Ump had thought it would have been a home run had it not hit the catwalk, then he could have ruled it a home run.

Dave Kingman once hit a popup that stuck in the rafters; it went up but never came down. (Supposedly its still up there somewhere.) Ground rule double.
