Not at the moment but you will need a valid passport to cross the U.S./Canada border starting next year, unfortunately.
What a drag...

You will if you fly. You won't if you drive - then you can still get through on a birth certificate. But after about Jan 1 2008, you'll need a passport.
My advice is to go apply for one now. If you ever want to leave the country in the next 10 years, you'll need one. And there's a huge backlog now, so apply soon. My wife has been waiting for over 3 months to get hers.
The only exception to this is if you need to go to Montreal in the next 3-4 months. You need to turn in the ID you use for your passport application, such as a birth certificate. And even then, it's probably worth the expense to go get another copy of your birth certificate to send, and keep one handy for the trip. You'll get the one you send in returned with the passport,

Not yet, unless you are flying, but starting January 1, 2008 you likely will no matter how you enter Canada. You'll probably need it to re-enter the US, though.
