No it's a complete waste of money they already have Mosques why do they need this one. I would rather see it spent on the NHS !! :)

I have also signed this petition and got a letter back from 10 Downing Street saying that there were no plans to build the mosque - I just think if the government was planning on funding something then the money would be better spend elsewhere or on other important things (like homes) for those that cannot get on the mortgage ladder for instance.

Apparently it's not actually happening; it's a bit contradictory as I too signed the petition and today got an email back saying that it wasn't going ahead but that if it did, it wouldn't be funded by tax payers....

I'm opposed to the idea as we already know that several mosques are used to recruit and radicalise members. When I see marches and rallies organised by moderate Muslims protesting terrorism, then perhaps I would feel more predisposed to support the construction of the biggest mosque in Europe right here in London.

In Germany, there is a similar debate going on; a big mosque is due to be built in Cologne but many people are unhappy about it.

This is really odd because I've read the reports saying that this was going to happen. Anyway, a friend sent me a government petition to sign asking for them to think again. I have had a reply from No 10 today totally denying that there was any intention of building a mega mosque. Interesting?
I am not at all against Muslims having their places of worship, fair enough but I really do
think that the massive building that was apparently going to be built would have been asking for trouble.

The report that the construction of the mosque was going to be paid for by the government is false they are looking for donors from citizens and other Arab states, Ken Livingston only said he would EVEN sponsor the mosque as a show of support after alot of people said they don't want a mosque in east London, it's not like the government is paying for it

This petition expresses concern about the possibility of planning permission being given for a large mosque in East London on a site near the London 2012 Olympic development in Newham.

Those who have signed the petition and members of the public alike should be aware that Newham Council have confirmed that they have granted no such planning permission or received an application for a mosque as described in this petition.

In addition, there have been no approaches made to the Government in terms of seeking funding, despite the widespread unsubstantiated claim that up to £100 million of taxpayers' money is being spent on this project.

The Greater London Authority has also made a statement about untrue claims circulating about the Mayor of London's involvement in this project. This is available at: http://www.london.gov.uk/mayor/statement_170707.jsp (new window).

Under the Town and Country Planning legislation, local planning authorities are responsible for the control of development in their area. In doing so they are required to take into account all considerations, including the views of interested persons and in particular local communities.

The Government strongly believes that where controversial issues such as religious premises arise, all involved should ensure that discussions are conducted in a manner that respects the views of all sections of our communities and in a way that does not raise tensions in local areas. The Government does not endorse the language used in this petition or the associated emails that have come to light over the course of the petition.

Newham Councill have no plans for a mosque. It's scaremongering by the BNP again and again.
I will never sign the petition.

This is NOT TRUE - it's a myth created by the BNP and perpetuated by the Evening Standard. There are no plans to build a 'mega-mosque', no planning application has been received or granted, and even if there were plans no taxpayers money would be spent as it is illegal to do so.

Please stop forwarding this fascist propaganda.

In a statement Ken Livingstone himself stated:

Mr Livingstone said the allegations in the emails were "clearly designed to deliberately whip up communal hatred and contain content that is entirely untrue. They are clearly being spread in an organised way for unscrupulous political reasons".

The Mayor repeated his past statement that "there is no proposal to use any public money at all for such a mosque; there is no link between plans for a mosque and the Olympics; and, as widely reported, there are actually no plans for a mosque on the scale claimed in the email."

Mr Livingstone has written to Veronica Wadley, Editor of the Evening Standard, asking her to confirm that the paper repudiates the content of the mass email and asking that the paper "clarify to readers and visitors to the website that the poll will be disregarded as totally unrepresentative."
