Allo = unrelated
pathic = relating to pathology

So allopathic medicine is treating illness in a way that is unrelated to pathology. It is a term used mostly by homoeopaths.

homoeopathic
homoeo = being similar
pathic = relating to pathology

In essense, it means "like cures like". The principle is that a crude drug will cause particular symptoms... and when than crude drug is potentised into "energetic" form, it will cure diseases that have symptoms similar to those that it produces as a crude drug.

There is another term....

isopathic
iso = same
pathic = relating to pathology

Isopathic medicine is treating disease with the SAME thing... for instance, homoeopathically potentising a person's blood to treat allergy problems (or other things relating to blood).

Allopathic medicine is the same medicine as you would see in the hospital, also known as western medicine. Basically it focuses on a systematic approach to treating the body through surgery/non-invasive treatment, ie, pills, medicines, that are hard to pronounce. This system is based on incidence of disease physiologically. There is another type of medicine practiced in the US called osteopathic medicine. It's mostly based on emotional/psychological testing and treatment.
