If you have mason jars at home, you could cut a small hole in the lid, fill the jar with citronella oil, and add the wick. It would be unique and serve the same purpose.

I make my own citronella and liquid parafin torches out of old, unique liquor bottles that people give to me. I am particularly fond of the crown royale bottles. They have to be squatty because the bottle to oil latern converter kits you can get at the craft store don't have particularly long wicks. But I embellish the bottles with gimp, appliques, sometimes buttons, whatever theme I'm doing and then the converter kits come with a glass fitting that inserts into the bottle neck with a wick in the middle. You can fill the bottle with either citronella or liquid parafin. The converter kits come with 5 wicked glass converters and cost around $5.

Yes, any kitchen oil will work if you don't need the citronella scent. Vigil candles at church as just wick threaded through a piece of aluminium that is floated on the soil, wick in the oil. Let it sit a bit before lighting.
