The Blue Whale is the largest animal to ever live on Earth. They are 33 meters (110 feet) long and weigh 181 metric tonnes. Unfortunately whalers killed almost all of them and now there are estimated to be only 5,000 to 12,000 left. If I remember correctly, they don't do well in captivity and definitely will not breed in captivity, so I don't think we've been able to help boost the Blue Whale population like we have with other animals, such as the Giant Panda.
What I've always found interesting is that the largest animal on Earth eats krill, one of the smallest. There must be one heck of a lot of krill in the ocean to feed even 5,000 Blue Whales let alone the population that the oceans sustained before humans came along.

Ayame is quite correct, and there really has to be a lot of krill in the oceans as, not only does the largest creature to ever inhabit the planet, the Blue Whale, live on them, but so does the second largest, the Fin or Finback Whales (80+ feet). Wow, that's a lot of krill as one Finback Whale can eat about 4000 lbs of krill a day.
Largest land animal is the African Elephant and it thankfully does not eat krill.....lol!!!!!!!!
