No troops have died in a pointless war.

War is always a choice. The America revolution was a choice. The Colonists choose to fight against tyranny. The could have lived under England indefinitely but they choose to fight. The war of 1812 was a choice. The Civil war was a choice. Lincoln could have just let the South secede but he chose to fight to save the Union.WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam all by choice. No people is ever forced to fight.
