The piece of equipment you need is called a Jet beam clamp, available from most good hire shops like the one i work for, it is a V configuration and operates by turning a threaded bar which clamps it over the beam, on the bottom of the clamp is a shackle that the winch attaches to, very easy to use.

You can hire girder clamps from most tool hire shops, you need to know the size of the girder, do a drawing and take it to the shop, we use them all the time but usually vertically for lifting heavy stuff. You can probably buy one for not too much money. Are you in the UK, if so check out HSS hire (online) also Machine Mart, branches everywhere.
