No
They are based on a formula that has never been defeated partially due to the fact that everyone under 18 is so predictable and typical that it's easy to custom-make literary works built solely to sell. Also, the merchandising is pretty obvious in it's tactics to the point where kids (anyone under 18) really is helpless to avoid purchasing. When something is hyped up to the level that both of these novels have been hyped, it's really hard to imagine anyone who can't think for themselves passing it up. Teens typically want to fit in. They don't care what, why or how...but they will jump onto just about any bandwagon that passes by. Harry Potter and Eragon are definately TYPICAL TRENDS, so naturally most everyone is in love with them. If you look at them for any real value as far as literary techniques go, aspects that will cause the novels to stand the test of time like other major literary works...you'll find none. They're basically pulp fiction. In 60 years no one will remember much about these other than it was a trend like Garbage Pail Kids, Cabbage Patch dolls, Rubik's Cubes, Sea Monkeys, etc etc etc.
Each generation has something they blindly follow. These are the current ones going right now, lest we forget Lord of the Rings...which is already dying out in it's obsessive fan base. See?
Love,
Snag

I loved them both. Eragon is a little more difficult to read. If you are into the fantasy genre they are well worth your time.
