It's highly likely. My grandmother had 18 kids in her lifetime, just like a whole lot of the older generation. A lot of these kids were back to back, born in the same year ... only about ten or eleven months apart from each other. My grandparents weren't rich people, so there wasn't a lot of formula that they could buy to feed every child! Guess what form of milk my aunts and uncles - as well as my mom - had! I've also studied up on slaves in the 1800s who had just had babies, so they still had enough breast milk to nurse their mistress' babies; in addition, they continued to be required to breed children while still breast feeding. You don't hear too much about the subject today, but it's really likely that, if you are having intercourse while breast feeding, you will still get pregnant.

While it’s not a ‘sure thing’, there are definitely possibilities that you can get pregnant while breastfeeding. If prevention is important to you, then the best method of contraception is some kind of barrier method, such as using condoms.

Following the birth of a baby, the resumption of a regular menstrual cycle will be different for each woman. If breastfeeding, the return of periods will be delayed, particularly if she is nursing exclusively and not supplementing her baby’s feeds with formula or solids. Having said that however, some women will get their periods even while breastfeeding, yet others won’t menstruate again until their children are past their first birthday.

When you are breastfeeding, your body’s production of the hormone prolactin is higher. Prolactin is a hormone that suppresses ovulation and as such, reduces your probability of pregnancy while breastfeeding to around 1 to 2 percent. During the first year, the percentage increases, and after about six months, the chance of conception stands at about 6%

Breastfeeding is not a form of birth control and many a woman has gotten pregnant while breastfeeding. Get on the mini pill if you are concerned about having another baby too soon, this one is safe to take while breast feeding or you need to start using protection of some sort.

Actually...

http://www.breastfeeding.com/reading_room/lam.html

"The Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) was created to allow women to safely rely on breastfeeding as a family planning method. Based on scientific research, the method uses three measures of a woman's fertility: 1) the return of her menstrual period, 2) her patterns of breastfeeding, and 3) the time postpartum. "

Obviously this is a short-term means of birth control but it does work.

However if you are not exclusively breastfeeding, you have started back with your period, or you have an older baby it is not going to work. Here are some methods of family planning that are compatible with breastfeeding.

If you don't want to get pregnant you should use protection. While it can be difficult to get pregnant when you are breastfeeding it is certainly possible. My mom got pregnant while she was breastfeeding and I know of several other people who did too.

First of all, how long have you been breastfeeding?

Actually, although you are breastfeeding and menstration has not returned, that doesn't mean you are not ovulating.

If you really want to get pregnant while breastfeeding, just get your doctor to check that you are ovulating and when. Then its a matter of doing it when you are ovulating to hit the jackpot.

Breastfeeding has nothing to do with it.. if you are not sore from having a baby anymore (and can have sex).. you are able to get pregnant right away. In other words breastfeeding is not a form of birth control if that's what you're asking.

It is extremely easy to get pregnant while breastfeeding...because your hormones are still going crazy. So says the doctor. I just started taking the mini-pill, which is safe to take while breastfeeding.
