I just drove 10 miles after the oil change and the oil filter fell off, when i was on highway. I pulled-off & checked my engine to see that there was no oil left. My engine got locked out!

I reported to the Jiffy lube & customer service person says that they will take care of the repair. Means, they will replace my engine with a used engine.

What would be the best resolution at this point?

I do not want to let them put some engine in my car and escape from what they had done. How can i rely on a used engine that they put in? My car was a well maintained 2000 Toyota Corolla.

Should i go to small claims court & get a compensation for the car rather than going for replacing the engine? I dont know how it will work out and how long it would take. I dont have any contacts with a lawyer to take legal views etc.

I appreciate and thank you for your suggestions. I am from Cincinnati, Ohio

Generally there is only one person you can trust and that is yourself. One jiffy Lube might have good people that do a great job and that treats you right but another may not, just like any independent garage. Wal-Mart is no better and I have read horror stories on the web from folks who had their oil changed there. There are a lot of Wal-Marts and I'm sure that because a few mess up doesn't mean that others aren't OK. I think the problem lies with Wal-Mart not hiring certified mechanics. Anyone off the street can be hired to change your oil. The same may be true of Jiffy lube and others. You may not have a problem right away but a half dozen oil changes or so later you may find that your drain plug is stripped out because it was over tightened. A real mechanic would know better. If you aren't going to do it yourself you are best going to an independent mechanic that you know and trust or to a dealer if you don't mind paying a lot and have them recommending additional services that you may or not need especially at their premium prices. Another place that would be a good place to go would be a Firestone dealer. Their prices are more reasonable than the dealer and they have certified reliable mechanics. But they may try to sell you additional services as well. The one I have been to seems to treat their customers well. Also many if not most of these places may not use the oil recommended by your manufacturer. Some will use only 10W30 oil because they don't want to stock drums different oils for different cars. Make sure you use the oil recommended for your car. If it is 5W30 use 5W30. If it is 5W20 then use 5W20. The engineers that work for the manufacturers know what they are doing. And don't waste your money on 3,000 mile oil changes.

Karen, I personally saw a Toyota Camry in the dealership (Toyota) last winter for the very same reason as yours. It had been sitting there for six weeks and they had heard nothing from the parent company of Jiffy Lube which is Pennzoil. Be sure to fill out a claim and demand the work be done at your local Toyota dealer. If I were you I'd haunt Jiffy Lube for a car rental while yours is in the shop. If they move like a proverbial turtle spend a few bucks on an attorney to make some calls and find out exactly what you as a consumer has as far as rights go.
Don't let them drag things on.

Document everything - work order paper, time of work, time leaving the place, time when car shuts off, promise by Jiffy Lube if you can put it in writing.

Once you have all tangible evidence, you can decide your options..

Inquire a trustworthy shop how much to replace a rebuilt engine and decide if you would still trust Jiffy Lube to rebuilt your engine.

Keep all paperwork just in case everything go sour and you have to pursue legal path.

Good Luck.

Not a big deal. Tell them you want a rebuilt engine with a warranty (ussually one year but the car will last longer) if they don't agree take them to small claims you don't need a lawyer for that. They should be providing you with a rental car until yours is repaired if not sue for that as well. Don't let them push you around they are clearly liable and will have to pay a lot more money if it goes to court. Get on their butts.

Of course, they're in the wrong and you can sue them if you have a good lawyer. Just know that it will take time especially if they drag their heels. In the meantime, you will have to get other transportation like a rental and add the cost of that to your compensation. Why not speak to a lawyer or legal company that won't necessarily charge you for just inquiring if you have a good case?

If you don't want their version of compensation, then going with a lawyer is your best bet.

Good luck.

Have it fixed by your regular shop. Submit the bill to them. Sue if they refuse to settle. Log all contacts with names. Pain in the butt but they will pay one way or an other. They will maintain new/rebuilt not what you came in with. Try to reach agreement in advance if possible. They will recommend shop to do work, check them out in person. You do not have to use them, but it may go faster if you do.How much time and money do you have?,is the question. Court probably will not award price of new motor.
