Leaking at a fitting, or mid-pipe? If it's mid-pipe, you've got a corroded pipe and will have to replace it. If it's leaking at a fitting, you can disconnect with a couple pipe wrenches, apply teflon tape or joint putty (I think putty does a better job on the coarse threads of galvanized pipe), and put it back together. For a temporary fix, there are what are essentialy "pipe bandaids" -- a wide hose-clamp with a rubber sleeve inside - wrap it around the leaking point and cinch down the clamps -- but this is stricly a temporary fix.

With threaded pipe, it's usually a bit of a puzzle to undo a fitting mid-run. You may have to remove several fittings/lengths of pipe to get to your leaking one.

The repair involves removing water from the pipe and re-flowing the solder into the joint. 30 minutes and maybe $60 labor (min charge for 1 hr). Removing the joint and adding two joints adds another weak point that could leak. Although there are splices that can be installed for this type of repair, it's easier and cheaper to re-flow the solder if the pipe is otherwise sound (not corroded with mineral deposits). Mineral build-up would require to removal of the bad joint. Double the price to $120 for that.

The steel ones tend to rust up and leak at their joints.

Replacement is the best answer. If it is an emergency you can get padded rubber clamps that will hold in the water till you repair it.
