Dyson are being investigated by trading standards due to the high number of complaints.

All the japanese stuff is (predictably and unfortunately) very reliable such as Panasonic and the Henry mentioned above is well built too.

I have kids, pets and a husband = lots of mess.
I've also tried Hoover and Vax, plus others, like most on here i've also spent too much money on hoovers.
The last one i bought (3 years ago) was a Dyson. When i brought it home i first used the Henry then i used the Vax which i had been using at the time, I then used the Dyson and could not believe how much muck and dust the others had left behind.
3 years is not a bad time for one to last, we do use them every day. I would advise buying another Dyson.

I had my basic Dyson for years. It was the first thing I bought when i started work when my children started school. Now I have an evolved model which I made out of my Mums broken one which I removed parts because her engine went. The Dyson not my mother. No vacuum has ever been as good. I would get the basic model.

I certainly can. I was a specialist cleaner for over 20 years and i've tried them all.
Firstly, dyson are c**p. Too many gadgets, awkward to empty, awkward to handle. Overrated and overpriced.
If you want a trouble free vacuum cleaner, go for neumatics 'Henry'.
Firstly, they cost around 100 pounds or less. They have a large dust capacity. You are supposed to use a bag, but if you run out don't worry, it works quite happily for years (and i mean years) without one. They are red and black and henrys always smiling, even when he falls on his head, which he often does! around 1200 watts of power so he's quite a sucker! Needs little maintenance, so long as you clean out the filters occasionally. Its also worth washing the cloth inner cap from time to time, and if it ever goes wrong (after the guarrantee) it's usually because one of the wires has come off its clip on the motor. (Just unplug, unscrew, look carefully and reclip!) this fault sometimes happens after 2 or 3 years use, but is a small price to pay for the friendliest hoover EVER!
(and no i don't work for the company!)
Finally, he's easy to unblock, just reverse the hose!

For a vacuum cleaner that can cost up to £300, I think it is a scandal that Dyson are such crap.
They are well known for the hose splitting, they need filters that cost an arm and a leg and they are too big to go under furniture. Ugly as well.
My recommendation would be a Sebo. If you are in the UK, pop along to your nearest John Lewis. They retail the cheapest at around £225 but you can get them on line for £180.
They are used in hospitals because of their high standard filtration. They work flat to the floor for going under furniture. Comes apart so you can vac the car, curtains, stairs as a hand held. Works on both hard floors and carpets. Snazzy designs too. They are German. Brilliant design.

The best cleaner I've ever had is the one I have at the moment it's a Samsung Jetpropel. It has six different settings for the different types of carpet from deep pile to flat and one for flooring, it's great at cleaning right to the edge and is especially good for removing animal hair and it comes with all the different tools. It's bagless and it's really easy to remove the dust container when you can see it's getting full and needs emptying, it also has a lifetime filter so you won't need to but new ones. It's very powerful and although it's an upright it's quite light to carry, so it's easy to carry up the stairs. I've had many cleaners over the years but so far this one is definitely the best, I use it everyday twice sometimes as my dog brings everything in from the garden so I need a good cleaner and this one's very good.

I've used Hoover (which I like) and Dirt Devil (which I like even better). Electrolux isn't a great one, at least in my opinion. My mom used to have a 'Rainbow'. It was a weird sort of vacuum in that it doubled as a shampooer, too. You had to put water into the holding tank which collected the dirt, which also doubled as the tank for catching the water when you shampooed. You actually had to attach the hose to your faucet when you were shampooing. My mother hated the darned thing, not because it didn't work well, but because you had to empty it so often. It lasted a very long time, though. I think she had it for about 10 years, and then she did the smart thing and switched from carpet to laminate.

I thought Dyson did come with a standard 5 years warranty?
You should have filled in the paper, mate!
I would still recommend Dyson, as they do come with a 5 year warranty.

My Oreck XL is the best vacuum cleaner i have ever had. It has lasted longer than my old Kirby did and it only weighs about 9 pounds. There is a reason that the hotels use them, they are so easy to use because they are so light and they are easy to fix if something does goes bad, plus they last forever. Try the Oreck you will not regret it.

RAINBOW! The only way to fly! Never needs bags/ uses water as the filter. We have had ours for about 10 years (bought it reconditioned for about $200 on Ebay) and my wife's parents have had one for at least 20 that I know of.

good units that cost less and last longer than the dyson
